Organization principles in neuronal and social circuits
I will describe some of the organizational principles of neuronal circuits and, relevant to social neuroscience, of networks of animals. Specifically, I will show that the structure of neuronal circuits corresponds to minimum wiring. Importantly, deviations from minimum wiring can also be explained from a general theory of deviations from optimality that we have also tested in metabolic networks. I will also describe some approaches in neurobiology to predict the connectivity for some simple functional outcomes like motion detection. Finally, I will deal with animals in groups taking decisions. I will detail a theory of decisions in which decision-makers also receive the results of the decisions made by others. Predictions from this theory are shown to correspond to collective animal behavior.
