García-Ojalvo´s talk highlights (Session 4)

ojalvo300The first talk of today was just full of noise. But “noise” in a good functional sense: Jordi García-Ojalvo showed us the functional benefits of stochasticity, noise, in biological network control.

In such a “packed” environment as the cell or a tissue, noise have many opportunities to arise. García-Ojalvo tried to answer the question of How do biological systems cope with these high levels of intrinsic stochasticity? And he showed us that Noise, in a biological context is not necessarily something bad. In fact, in many biological systems, such as mammal fibroblasts or B. subtilis, noise can be a rhythm enhancer, an information router in the signalling pathways, and a bet hedger.
